Spider Veins - Removed By Laser Treatment

We often get told, “I’m looking to get my spider veins removed”. The client looking for this treatment usually has a couple of main questions. “What treatment do you do?” and “will it hurt?”

The medical term for spider veins is telangiectasia, and they are broken capillary blood vessels underneath the skin. Having light-coloured or fair skin make telangiectasia more visible—areas around the nose, under the eyes, or on the cheeks are common locations.

Spider veins appear as tiny red or blue lines, usually less than 1 mm in diameter, that look like branches or a spider web just below the surface of your skin.

What causes spider veins on the face?

The causes of spider veins on the face may differ from spider veins elsewhere on the body. The following are some of these causes:

Venous deficiency occurs due to a deficiency in backflow of the blood in the veins, causing increased pressure and damage to the vessel walls. Venous deficiency can occur from prolonged inflammation, high blood pressure, and obesity. Even rubbing or washing your face too hard may also lead to broken capillary vessels.

Your age can be a factor. As we get older, our blood vessels become weaker and thinner, causing aged skin to make spider veins more noticeable. Ageing capillaries have a greater tendency to break compared to younger ones.

Inflammatory skin conditions, such as Rosacea can lead to the development of spider veins due to prolonged dilation or irritation.

Free radicals can cause oxidative damage to blood vessels. Even too much exposure to the sun can be a cause of spider veins on the face or under the eyes.

Factors such as stress, insomnia, eyestrain, or a lack of exercise can affect our health in negative ways, and spider veins can develop as a consequence.

Many factors can cause spider veins, Things like obesity, high blood pressure, birth control pills, and pregnancy.

A willing volunteer was sought. The rest of the staff claimed to be far too young for spider veins, which meant that it was up to me to step forward and offer my face for demonstration purposes. So, I placed myself in the hands of an Aesthetic Therapist at La Belle Forme Glasgow and we filmed the video below. She used Nd:Yag and Green Light on my face. At no time did I feel uncomfortable. Did it hurt? No more than what I would call a ping – a very short sting that was forgotten in seconds. Treatment time was around 20 minutes and aftercare was simple – just use a sunscreen and treat the area with aloe vera.

The results were instant. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who thinks spider veins on their nose look unsightly.

Two Year Evaluation Of PERLE Smooth Opaque Round Breast Implants

PERLE Breast Implant Study

A recent paper published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum, by La Belle Forme owner and Medical Director Taimur Shoaib and others, evaluated the preliminary results of a new, smooth, round, and opaque breast implant PERLE by GC Aesthetics used by a single-center UK aesthetic practice – Glasgow Day Surgery Centre. Mr Shoaib presented the paper at the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS) World Congress in Athens.

“I performed this study to examine the safety of PERLE implants. We introduced these implants into my clinic, La Belle Forme in Glasgow, at the beginning of 2021 when I heard about the science behind them. Every empirical aspect of the implant fitted in with my idea of high quality and I wanted to test this. We followed up 374 patients, with PERLE implants, over an average of 18 months. Our study showed that the safety profile of these implants is comparable with other modern implants with no implant-related complications and no cases of capsular contracture.”

Safety In Breast Implant Surgery

Modern breast implant surgery is considered to be very safe, with a recent study from Italy demonstrating no perioperative mortality in almost 100,000 such patients over a period of 8 years. Yet, the ideal breast implant still does not exist. Surgeons choose breast implants based on a shared decision-making process with patients, taking into account their individual ideals, requirements, and the best available evidence.

Patients undergoing aesthetic breast surgery between January 2021 and December 2022, on whom the PERLE implant had been used, were reviewed to establish:

  • The operating surgeon
  • the pocket in which the implant was placed
  • If mastopexy (uplift) was also performed
  • The follow-up period
  • The type of surgeries the surgeon performed
  • Type of revision surgery (if any)

Patient demographics:

  • 385 patients underwent aesthetic breast surgery in the period
  • 374 (97.1%) had the PERLE breast implant placed
  • All patients identified themselves as female, with the exception of one, who self-identified as gender-fluid
  • Mean age = 32 years, range 19 to 62

Procedure details:

  • The majority of patients underwent bilateral procedures (99.1%) through a subglandular/subfascial approach (85.3%)
  • Primary breast augmentation (77.6%) was the most commonly performed procedure, followed by augmentation-mastopexy (16.8%)
  • A total of 745 PERLE breast implants were placed, with the majority being either MR (45.5%) or HR (36.8%) profile

Postoperative Fillers Reduce Revision Rates in Rhinoplasty

Dermal Fillers After Rhinoplasty

Before and after photograph of dermal fillers post-rhinoplasty

A recent paper by La Belle Forme owner and Medical Director Taimur Shoaib and others aimed to review the successful use of dermal fillers (hyaluronic acid) fillers post-rhinoplasty. Minor imperfections following rhinoplasty are high and can cause distress and anxiety to a patient who has been concerned about the appearance of their nose for many years and is understandably hoping to have the best result possible.

Whilst surgical corrections can be made, a number of patients would not benefit from another surgery.  For these patients, dermal fillers may be the ideal solution.

Out of 800 patients who had undergone a rhinoplasty 85 of those had a follow-up treatment using dermal fillers

Patients may have believed that fillers would be a short-term fix, similar to a non-surgical nose job and that the corrections to their nose would soon abate requiring further fillers to be used. However, as the paper outlines, dermal fillers after rhinoplasty can be long-lasting, perhaps even permanent.

What is the cost of breast reduction surgery in the UK?

Cost Of Breast Reduction Surgery

The cost of breast reduction surgery in the UK varies depending on a number of factors, including the surgeon’s fees, the location of the surgery, and the complexity of the procedure. At La Belle Forme the cost of breast reduction surgery in the UK can be found on our prices webpage.

Here are some factors that can affect the cost of breast reduction surgery:

  • The surgeon’s fees: The surgeon’s fees are the biggest factor that affects the cost of breast reduction surgery. Surgeons in different parts of the country charge different fees, so the cost of surgery can vary depending on where you live.
  • The location of the surgery: The cost of breast reduction surgery can also be affected by the location of the surgery.
  • The complexity of the procedure: The complexity of the procedure can also affect the cost of breast reduction surgery. If you have a larger chest or if you need more extensive surgery, the cost can be higher.

In addition to the surgeon’s fees, the cost of breast reduction surgery can also include the following:

  • Anesthesia: The cost of anesthesia is typically included in the surgeon’s fees. However, if you have any special requirements, such as needing general anesthesia instead of local anesthesia, the cost may be higher.
  • Operating room facilities: The cost of operating room facilities is typically not included in the surgeon’s fees. This cost can vary depending on the location of the surgery and the type of facilities used.
  • Other expenses: Other expenses that may be associated with breast reduction surgery include:
    • Post-operative care: This may include the cost of dressings, medication, and follow-up appointments.
    • Travel expenses: If you need to travel to have your surgery, you will need to factor in the cost of transportation and accommodation.

If you are considering breast reduction surgery, it is important to talk to your surgeon about the costs involved. They will be able to give you an estimate of the total cost of surgery based on your individual circumstances.

At La Belle Forme our price is all-inclusive. We have our own Day Case hospital and the cost of your breast reduction surgery, with the exception of your travel, includes all the costs detailed above.

Vasectomy Consultations

Vasectomy In Glasgow

If you are considering a vasectomy consultation, here are some things you need to know. A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that is performed on men as a form of permanent birth control. During the procedure, the vas deferens, which are the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra, are cut, blocked, or sealed. This prevents sperm from being released during ejaculation and thus reduces the chances of fertilization of a partner’s egg.Vasectomy La Belle Forme Glasgow Day Surgery Centre

Vasectomy is typically an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia. It is a safe and effective method of birth control and does not affect a man’s sexual function or libido. However, it is important to note that a vasectomy should be considered a permanent form of birth control, and while reversal procedures are available, they are not always successful. Therefore, it is important to carefully consider all options before deciding to undergo a vasectomy.

Advantages of a vasectomy

  • the failure rate is very low 1 in 2,000
  • it does not affect your hormone levels or sex drive
  • it will not affect the spontaneity of sex or interfere with sex
  • it is a simpler, safer, and more reliable alternative to female sterilisation

Vasectomy Consultations

At La Belle Forme your Consultant Urologist will explain in full the pros and cons of the procedure prior to surgery within our private hospital at the Glasgow Day Surgery Centre.

Urology Explained

What urologists do and when you should consider seeing one

What is Urology?

Urology is the field of medicine that deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra). The field also deals with diagnosing and treating matters concerning the male reproductive tract (penis, testes, scrotum, prostate, etc.)

What is a Urologist?

Urologists diagnose and treat diseases of the urinary tract in both men and women. Some examples of conditions a urologist can treat include: urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, bladder and prostate cancer, urinary incontinence, infertility, erectile dysfunction, and other conditions affecting the urinary and reproductive systems.

What Procedures Can a Urologist Perform?

When visiting a urologist, they may use a variety of diagnostic techniques such as urinalysis, blood tests, ultrasounds, and biopsies to evaluate and diagnose conditions of the urinary and reproductive systems.

They are also trained to perform several types of surgery. These may include:

  • Cystectomy (the surgical removal of the bladder to treat cancer)
  • Prostatectomy (the surgical removal of the prostate gland to treat prostate cancer)
  • Vasectomy (a surgical procedure to cut or seal the tubes that carry a man’s sperm to permanently prevent pregnancy)
  • Circumcision (the surgical removal of the foreskin)

When Should You See a Urologist?

Your primary GP may be able to treat some minor urologic issues like a UTI, but if issues persist, it is probably time to see a urologist for diagnosis and treatment. If you know your symptoms or condition involve the urinary tract or male reproductive system, you may choose to see a urologist as your first step. Symptoms you should consider seeing a urologist for include:

  • Blood in your urine
  • Feeling a frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Weak urine flow, dribbling

You should also see a urologist if you’re a man and you’re experiencing these symptoms:

  • Lumps in the testicle
  • Trouble getting or keeping an erection

Urologists work closely with other healthcare providers, such as oncologists and gynecologists, to provide comprehensive care to their patients.

La Belle Forme will be offering urology consultations and treatment from May 25th 2023. These services will be provided by Consultant Urological Surgeon, Mr Alistair McKay. Enquire today to find out more.
