Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are swollen, enlarged veins that can be seen on the feet or legs. The veins can differ in colour from blue to purple and can appear lumpy, bulging, or contorted.

Varicose veins can cause a variety of uncomfortable symptoms but are mainly a visual nuisance looking rather unattractive. This can often prevent the sufferer from engaging in activities where, due to the clothing worn, the veins may be on display.

At La Belle Forme in Glasgow Day Surgery Centre, we offer a range of treatments for varicose veins which can include:

  • Ultrasound Sclerotherapy involves the administration of foam to the affected area, guided by ultrasound imaging, for an added level of precision.
  • Radiofrequency (RF) Ablation involves the surgeon inserting a small catheter through a puncture in your lower leg. The enlarged vein is heated causing it to shrink and close.

At consultation, your surgeon will discuss the best treatment option for your particular case.

Leg veins have valves, which only let the blood flow in one direction The valves in the legs have to work hard to pump the blood upwards toward the heart. When a problem occurs with the valves, varicose veins can occur. Valves become weak and don’t close properly. Blood then flows backward and begins to pool in the veins. As a result, valves will weaken under the pressure becoming enlarged with a bulging appearance- this is what we call varicose veins.

According to the NHS, Symptom of varicose veins can include:

  • aching, heavy, and uncomfortable legs
  • swollen feet and ankles
  • burning or throbbing in your legs
  • muscle cramp in your legs, particularly at night
  • dry, itchy, and thin skin over the affected vein

Certain things can increase your chances of developing varicose veins, such as:

  • being female
  • having a close family member with varicose veins
  • being older
  • being overweight
  • having a job that involves long periods of standing
  • being pregnant

The symptoms are usually worse during warm weather or if you’ve been standing up for long periods of time. They may improve when you walk around or if you rest and raise your legs. If your veins are causing pain or discomfort you should contact us for a consultation on the best treatment for you.
