What Is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure that removes or repositions excess skin, fat, or muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. At La Belle Forme in Glasgow, we offer bespoke eyelid surgery to help reduce sagging skin, under-eye bags, and hooded lids—providing a fresher, more alert appearance.

This surgery is popular with both men and women looking to reduce signs of ageing or correct hereditary eyelid concerns. It can be performed alone or combined with other facial procedures such as brow lift or facelift for enhanced results.

Your surgeon will carry out a detailed assessment and consultation to determine the best approach for you.

What Happens During Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is typically carried out under local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure.

  • Incisions are made along the natural eyelid crease (upper lid) or just below the lash line (lower lid).
  • Excess skin and fat are carefully removed or repositioned to restore a smoother contour.
  • Fine stitches are used to close the incisions.

Scarring is minimal and well-hidden in natural folds. You’ll return home the same day with a tailored aftercare plan to support your healing.

Post Lymphatic Drainage — Eyelid Surgery Aftercare

Eyelid surgery — whether upper, lower or both — involves delicate incisions around the eye area where the skin is exceptionally thin and the lymphatic drainage network is particularly active. Post-surgical swelling around the eyes can be significant and distressing for patients, affecting vision temporarily and making the recovery period feel longer than expected without targeted support.
Post Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is one of the most effective treatments available for reducing periorbital (around-the-eye) swelling following blepharoplasty. The feather-light technique is perfectly suited to the delicate skin around the eyes — gentle directional strokes along the facial lymphatic pathways guide post-surgical fluid away from the eye area toward the cervical lymph nodes for clearance.
  • Rapidly reduces swelling and puffiness around the upper and lower eyelids
  • Reduces bruising beneath and around the eyes faster than natural resolution
  • Supports healing of the delicate incision sites around the eye area
  • Helps the eyelid contours settle naturally without prolonged puffiness
  • Exceptionally gentle — adapted for the most sensitive facial tissue
Facial MLD for blepharoplasty recovery can begin within 48 hours of surgery in most cases. Sessions are typically 30 to 45 minutes and are focused on the upper face, eye area and surrounding lymphatic pathways. Most patients see a visible reduction in periorbital swelling after just 2 to 3 sessions.

Is Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?

You may benefit from eyelid surgery if you:

  • Have loose or sagging eyelid skin that affects your vision or appearance
  • Want to reduce puffiness or under-eye bags
  • Seek a more refreshed and youthful look around the eyes
  • Are in good general health and have realistic expectations

Your surgeon will advise on whether upper, lower, or combined blepharoplasty is suitable for your needs.

Smoother, tighter eyelid appearance Enhanced eye definition and brightness Can improve vision if sagging eyelid skin impairs sight Long-lasting results with minimal downtime

Like all surgical procedures, blepharoplasty carries some risks, including:

  • Bruising, swelling, or temporary dryness
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Scarring (usually hidden in natural folds)
  • Asymmetry or dissatisfaction with cosmetic results
  • Rare risks include infection or vision changes

Your consultation will include a full discussion of the risks and how they are managed.
