What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that removes stubborn fat deposits from areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. At La Belle Forme in Glasgow, we use advanced liposuction techniques to shape and define areas such as the abdomen, thighs, arms, flanks, and chin.

This surgical treatment is not a substitute for weight loss but can be highly effective in improving body proportions and enhancing your silhouette. Every procedure is tailored to your individual needs, taking into account your goals, body type, and lifestyle.

Whether you’re looking to remove small pockets of fat or treat multiple areas, our expert surgeons will guide you through the process with a clear, honest approach.

What Happens During Surgery?

Your liposuction journey begins with an in-depth consultation, where your surgeon will assess the areas of concern and discuss your expectations. You’ll receive personalised advice on the most suitable technique for you.

On the day of surgery, you’ll be given local or general anaesthesia depending on the size of the treatment area. Small incisions are made near the target area, through which a thin tube (cannula) is inserted to loosen and suction out fat.

Once the fat is removed, the incisions are closed, and compression garments are applied to help reduce swelling and support healing.

Is Liposuction Right For Me?

You may be a suitable candidate for liposuction if you:

  • Have stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to diet or exercise
  • Are close to your ideal weight and want improved body definition
  • Are in good physical health and have good skin elasticity

It may not be suitable if you have significant skin laxity or are seeking a weight-loss solution. A full medical evaluation will be carried out before any treatment.

  • Targeted fat removal for a more sculpted appearance
  • Permanent removal of fat cells in treated areas
  • Improved body proportions and silhouette
  • Minimally invasive surgery with small incisions
  • Performed by experienced surgeons in a regulated clinic

As with any surgical procedure, there are some potential risks, including:

  • Bruising, swelling, or soreness after treatment
  • Irregular contours or skin dimpling
  • Temporary numbness or changes in skin sensitivity
  • Infection or delayed healing (rare)
  • Small scars at the incision sites

All risks will be explained thoroughly during your consultation to help you make an informed decision.

Traditional Liposuction vs VASER Liposuction — Which Is Right for You?

At La Belle Forme, we offer both traditional liposuction and VASER liposuction — two proven techniques for removing unwanted fat and reshaping the body. Both are effective, and both are available at our HIS-registered clinics across Scotland. The right choice depends on your goals, the areas being treated, and the results you are looking to achieve.

During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your individual needs and recommend the most appropriate technique for you.

Traditional Liposuction

Traditional liposuction uses a thin tube called a cannula, which is moved back and forth through the fat layer to mechanically break up and remove unwanted fat cells. The fat is then suctioned out through the cannula.

VASER Liposuction

VASER liposuction uses ultrasound energy to emulsify fat cells before they are removed. The ultrasound waves break down the fat into a liquid state, making it easier to remove precisely and with less trauma to surrounding tissue.

Post Lymphatic Drainage — Recommended Aftercare

Liposuction disrupts the fat cells and surrounding tissue beneath the skin, which triggers a natural inflammatory response as the body begins to heal. Post-surgical fluid accumulates in the treated areas in the days and weeks that follow, causing swelling, tightness and in some cases bruising that can take months to fully resolve without targeted support.

Post Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is the most clinically effective aftercare treatment following liposuction. Now available at La Belle Forme across our Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth clinics, MLD uses gentle, rhythmic hand movements along the lymphatic pathways of the treated area to encourage the body to clear post-surgical fluid naturally — reducing swelling, preventing complications and helping your results become visible sooner.

  • Significantly reduces post-surgical swelling and bruising in the treated areas
  • Helps prevent fibrosis — the hardening of tissue beneath the skin that can affect the smoothness of results
  • Clears seromas (fluid pockets) before they become problematic
  • Supports even skin retraction for a smoother, more defined contour
  • Can reduce recovery time from months to weeks when started early and consistently

We recommend beginning Post Lymphatic Drainage within 24 to 48 hours of your liposuction procedure. Most patients benefit from 2 to 3 sessions per week during the first two weeks, reducing in frequency as healing progresses. Your therapist will assess and design a personalised session plan at your first appointment.

FAQ's

This depends on your body type and the areas treated. Your surgeon will advise what’s safe and achievable during your consultation.

Fat cells removed during liposuction are permanently gone. However, significant weight gain can cause remaining fat cells to enlarge, so a healthy lifestyle is key to maintaining results.

You may experience some discomfort or tenderness during the initial recovery. Pain is usually manageable with prescribed medication and improves within a few days.

The incisions used for liposuction are small and placed discreetly. Scars usually fade over time and can be improved with proper aftercare.
