A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure used to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen while also tightening the abdominal muscles. The procedure is typically performed on people who have lost a significant amount of weight, or women who have had multiple pregnancies and are left with excess skin and weakened abdominal muscles.

How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

During a tummy tuck, an incision is made horizontally across the lower abdomen, typically from hip bone to hip bone. The surgeon will then remove excess skin and fat from the area, and may also tighten the abdominal muscles to create a flatter, more toned appearance. The remaining skin is then pulled taut and sutured closed.

Tummy tucks are a major surgical procedure and involve a significant recovery period. It’s important that you discuss this with your surgeon who can advise you on whether a tummy tuck is the correct option for you.

Types of Abdominoplasty

There are three main types of tummy tuck – the full Tummy Tuck, the mini-abdominoplasty, and the fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty. These may be combined with liposuction or muscle tightening and the right type of procedure for you will depend on what your stomach looks like.

Choose Your Tummy Tuck Surgeon

We have several leading UK surgeons who regularly perform tummy tucks. All surgeons are fully qualified with many years of experience and our hospital is registered with Healthcare Improvement Scotland.

If you are looking for a Tummy Tuck La Belle Forme is able to offer you a comprehensive service tailored to meet your individual requirements – commencing with an initial consultation with one of our Consultant Plastic Surgeons. Our consultation fees start from £50.

Your initial consultation does not commit you to surgery but gives you an in-depth understanding of the process and risks involved with a Tummy Tuck procedure so you can make an informed decision as to whether surgery is the right choice for you. The initial consultation also allows the consultant to find out about your expectations.

Listed below are the risks associated with Tummy Tuck surgery.

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Seroma formation
  • Scarring from hip to hip with slight bulges at the edges of the scars (known as dog ears) and migration of the scar with time to a higher or lower position
  • Overcorrection
  • Under correction
  • Asymmetry
  • Wound healing delays, including necrosis, more common in smokers
  • Changes with time, weight gain, weight loss and pregnancy
changes in skin sensation around the hips and lower abdomen

The vast majority of people are delighted that they have had the procedure, but people can notice some minor imperfections after the operation.

The most common problems after abdominoplasty are seroma formation, slight fullness at the scar line, or a slight difference between the left and right sides of the abdomen.

Whilst a Tummy Tuck can be transformational it is however a significant operation.

Generally speaking, patients should allow for up to six weeks of recovery time before they are back to their normal energy levels and fully see the final results.
