What is Health Improvement Scotland?

Health Improvement Scotland (HIS) is the national healthcare improvement organisation for Scotland. The purpose of HIS is to “reduce healthcare-associated infection risk to hospital patients, to improve the care of elderly patients, and to regulate independent healthcare services”.

They aim to drive improvements through the following:

  • Enabling people to make informed decisions about their care and treatment.
  • Helping health and social care organisations to redesign and continuously improve services.
  • Provide evidence and share knowledge that enables people to get the best out of the services they use and helps services improve.
  • Provide quality assurance that gives people confidence in the services and supports providers to improve.
  • Making the best use of resources, we aim to ensure every pound invested in our work adds value to the care people receive.

Why is it Important for a Healthcare Facility to Meet HIS Standards?

Both surgical and non-surgical procedures can carry a degree of risk. When selecting a healthcare facility, it is important to make sure they comply with HIS standards – this means you can rest assured the facility is focused on delivering the best possible patient care, and that staff are fully qualified and trained to deal with complications if they arise.

La Belle Forme is proud to have achieved a GOOD grading in the following key quality indicators:

1.     People’s experience of care and the involvement of carers and families

HIS found that La Belle Forme patients were “very complimentary about the service and able to make informed decisions about their treatment.” In addition, several comments were collected from patients about the things they valued regarding their experience. These included:

  • ‘Not judged when explaining reasons for wanting procedure, was made to feel like no question was silly even if the answer was obvious!’
  • ‘Comprehensive information about best treatment options.’
  • ‘I was always told what was happening and asked if I felt ok.’
  • ‘Pre-operation consultation 3 weeks before surgery.’

2.     Safe delivery of care

HIS reported that La Belle Forme had robust systems in place to manage the delivery of care and noted that staff were aware of their responsibilities and had undergone the appropriate training. the Clinic’s medical equipment and surroundings were also reported as being well maintained and cleaned.

3.     Leadership of improvement and change

HIS found morale among La Belle Forme staff to be high and noted that staff, at all levels, had the opportunity to partake in key decision-making.
