What urologists do and when you should consider seeing one
What is Urology?
Urology is the field of medicine that deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra). The field also deals with diagnosing and treating matters concerning the male reproductive tract (penis, testes, scrotum, prostate, etc.)
What is a Urologist?
Urologists diagnose and treat diseases of the urinary tract in both men and women. Some examples of conditions a urologist can treat include: urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, bladder and prostate cancer, urinary incontinence, infertility, erectile dysfunction, and other conditions affecting the urinary and reproductive systems.
What Procedures Can a Urologist Perform?
When visiting a urologist, they may use a variety of diagnostic techniques such as urinalysis, blood tests, ultrasounds, and biopsies to evaluate and diagnose conditions of the urinary and reproductive systems.
They are also trained to perform several types of surgery. These may include:
- Cystectomy (the surgical removal of the bladder to treat cancer)
- Prostatectomy (the surgical removal of the prostate gland to treat prostate cancer)
- Vasectomy (a surgical procedure to cut or seal the tubes that carry a man’s sperm to permanently prevent pregnancy)
- Circumcision (the surgical removal of the foreskin)
When Should You See a Urologist?
Your primary GP may be able to treat some minor urologic issues like a UTI, but if issues persist, it is probably time to see a urologist for diagnosis and treatment. If you know your symptoms or condition involve the urinary tract or male reproductive system, you may choose to see a urologist as your first step. Symptoms you should consider seeing a urologist for include:
- Blood in your urine
- Feeling a frequent or urgent need to urinate
- Pain or burning during urination
- Difficulty urinating
- Weak urine flow, dribbling
You should also see a urologist if you’re a man and you’re experiencing these symptoms:
- Lumps in the testicle
- Trouble getting or keeping an erection
Urologists work closely with other healthcare providers, such as oncologists and gynecologists, to provide comprehensive care to their patients.
